Driving innovation to combat cancer in firefighters

International medical engineering innovation network

About our network

The primary goal of our network is to enhance firefighter safety and well-being across Europe and beyond, focusing on reducing the life-threatening risks they face. Firefighters are exposed to hazardous substances like asbestos, formaldehyde, and aromatic amines, which increase their cancer risk. Minimizing exposure through improved occupational safety and innovative products – such as protective gear and hygiene protocols – is crucial.

Our network brings together companies in occupational safety, emergency services, unions, and research institutes to drive projects and develop advanced solutions that protect firefighter health.

Vision

Vision

Our vision is to create a safer and healthier environment for firefighters across Europe and the world, driving a paradigm shift in occupational safety within the emergency services sector.

Goal

Goal

We aim to establish a comprehensive and innovative framework that not only minimizes the risks associated with hazardous substances but also redefines firefighting as a profession that prioritizes the well-being of its personnel. This is particularly crucial given the statistic that firefighters face a threefold increased risk of developing cancer.

Technologies

Textile technologies
Textile technologies

In this innovation network, textile technology focuses on developing advanced protective fabrics for firefighters, designed to minimize exposure to carcinogenic substances. It involves creating fire-resistant, breathable, and chemical-resistant materials that improve safety and reduce long-term health risks.

Sustainable solvents and chemicals
Sustainable solvents and chemicals

Sustainable solvents and chemicals in this context are developed to clean and decontaminate firefighting gear and equipment without introducing harmful toxins. The aim is to replace hazardous chemicals with eco-friendly alternatives that reduce carcinogen exposure while ensuring effective decontamination.

Hygiene technologies
Hygiene technologies

Hygiene technologies within this network focus on procedures and products to decontaminate firefighters and their equipment after exposure to toxic environments. By improving hygiene protocols, the network aims to reduce carcinogenic residue buildup and lower the risk of long-term health effects, such as cancer.
